This year’s International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) theme is enhanced by engineering. It recognises the incredible contribution women engineers are making to the profession and encourages more women and young girls to pursue a career in engineering.

In honour of International Women in Engineering Day, celebrated globally on June 23rd, we invite you to join us for an inspiring Industry Panel Discussion and Networking event. This day serves as a tribute to the invaluable contributions of women in the field of engineering, highlighting their achievements, innovations, and leadership. This event provides a unique opportunity to come together and celebrate the remarkable women and businesses championing gender diversity and inclusion within our local engineering industry. Join us for an engaging panel discussion, where esteemed industry leaders will share their insights, experiences, and strategies for advancing gender equality in engineering.

About the speakers

Jane Peters
Jane Peters
Technical Director, AECOM

Jane Peters is a Civil Engineer, Project Manager and Technical Director with over 30 years’ experience in the engineering and construction industry, her experience encompasses a broad range of engineering and management roles across large multidisciplinary teams to deliver precinct planning, infrastructure and transport projects.

Felicity Petrie
Felicity Petrie
Royal Australian Navy, Australian War Memorial Fellow

Commander Felicity is a highly accomplished Royal Australian Navy officer with extensive experience in various roles. She began her military journey through the Australian Defence Force Academy and has since served on several HMA Ships, participating in multiple operations and exercises across different regions. Felicity holds a Bachelor degree in Engineering (Electrical) and a Master of Engineering, along with a Master of Defence and Security Studies, making her a recognised expert in her field. She has undertaken multiple roles in maritime capability sustainment and asset management. Her career has also seen her involved in the authoring and development of strategic policy and doctrine.

 

Lama Qasem
Lama Qasem
Executive Branch Manager, Major Projects Canberra

Lama currently leads a team of project managers and officers, supporting the ACT government partner directorates including TCCS in successfully delivering their capital work program. Before joining MPC, Lama led the delivery of various capital works projects in TfNSW, including the Windsor Bridge Project, Henry Lawson Drive upgrades, and the Mascot Tunnel Refurbishment. With a diverse career background, Lama has also worked in the private and public sectors. She also brings valuable experience from her oversea roles in Abu Dhabi - UAE, where she successfully delivered projects across various sectors in health, commercial, residential and civil infrastructure.

Kate Yaxley
Kate Yaxley
Squadron Leader, Royal Australian Air Force

Squadron Leader Kate is a Cyber Domain professional at Joint Capabilities Group, specialising in the electromagnetic spectrum. Kate was the 2021 ANZ Women in AI in Defence winner for her research into biologically inspired swarm system. Kate seeks to foster curiosity in diverse teams to realise innovative outcomes.

In the spirit of INWED, Engineers Australia encourage industry to ‘pay it forward’ by sponsoring a high school student or teacher, or current student engineer to attend this INWED 2024 event. Support the next generation of engineers who will shape our future. 

To get involved, simply select a ‘pay it forward ticket’ at the time of registration to provide a complimentary ticket for an aspiring engineer or educator. 

If you have a recipient in mind, please ensure you invite them to the event and let them know you are supporting them with a sponsored ticket. Please also complete the ‘pay it forward’ box with their name and contact details so that they are formally registered for the event. 

If you don’t have someone in mind but would still like to ‘pay it forward’, select ‘Engineers Australia to fill’ option and Engineers Australia will allocate the ticket to a worthy participant on your behalf.
