Education – essential for life. It takes 20 years to develop an engineer

Education is essential for building our nation. Last month, I spoke of the importance of infrastructure. Education is just as important… developing an engineering graduate is a long term process, which begins early in school. It takes about twenty years, from the start of education, to produce an engineering graduate.
When people think of ‘education’, they tend to think of the various programs at schools, TAFE, university. This is only part of the picture. Equally important for a profession, is the continuing professional development we undergo on a regular basis to maintain skills and knowledge, and to keep up to date on developments. Much learning occurs within the workforce. This includes on the job training as well as recognised courses. Ongoing education occurs throughout our lives
