Developing and commercialising innovative technology is very challenging, which is why most early stage technology start-ups fail within the first two years. There are many reasons why these innovative companies fail – “The technology didn’t work”; “It was too costly”;  “We took too long to develop our product and somebody else beat us to market”; or “Large global players blocked our access to key market channels”.  And, in almost every case – “We simply ran out of money”.   Surviving these challenges is known colloquially as “Crossing the Valley of Death”. Whilst the global economy and market conditions are outside of anyone’s control, there are many other critical success factors that are within the control of founders, inventors, directors and senior managers of new technology companies.  For example, an efficient and cost-effective R&D program, effective go-to-market strategies, clever strategic partnerships and prudent financial management all contribute to success.  However, the most important critical success factor of all is great leadership.

Ben Cardillo and Bruce Lyman from Four Bells will present a practical survival guide for early stage technology companies and illustrate with case studies how excellence in leadership underpins commercial success.

Ben Cardillo has more than 20 years’ experience in corporate advisory practice, including capital raisings, divestments, and mergers and acquisitions.  Ben has advised CSIRO on the commercialisation of a wide range of innovative technologies produced as a result of long-term CSIRO R&D. Until recently, Ben was CEO of Advanced Hybrid, a technology start-up developing new engineering products for the automotive and renewable energy industries. Previous roles include Business Development Manager of Locata Corporation and executive director of Origin Technology, Origin Ventures and Newport Capital Group.

Bruce Lyman has more than 25 years’ commercial experience working in government, the private sector and not-for profit organisations, including founding Argus Solutions Ltd, an ASX-listed pioneering biometric security company. Bruce’s commercial achievements include: conceiving and creating Argus’ intellectual property plan; building key relationships with government; raising more than $25m in equity funding; leading the development of globally recognised, peer reviewed technology innovation; achieving national recognition for the company through the Australian Technology Showcase; and being chosen as the 2010 Biometrics Vendor of the Year” (Frost and Sullivan Award).
