The presentation will provide an insight on how electrical power is collected from the overhead line, transformed to provide battery charging, 3 phase power and provide mechanical tractive effort at the wheels.

The Adelaide EMU High Voltage, Propulsion and Auxiliary Distribution will be presented by Carl Parr, Performance Engineer, Dry Creek Railcar Depot, Bombardier Transportation Australia. Carl has worked in the rail industry for 31 years, starting life as an electrical apprentice before engaging in study as an Electrical Engineer. In the UK he worked on numerous projects including Euro shuttle locomotives operating through the channel tunnel and on the Victoria line project which operates on the London Underground servicing (at that time) approximately 200 million passenger journeys per year. In 2012 Carl joined the Bombardier team here in Adelaide relocating with his family.

  • Pantograph and roof equipment
  • Main transformer
  • Propulsion overview schematic diagram explanation
  • Line converter module function (LCM)
  • Motor converter module function (MCM)
  • Auxiliary converter module function (ACM)
  • Cooling and power control
  • Traction motor and gearbox basic overview
