This talk will discuss how to use the principles of power system economics, energy management and power sector restructuring to develop a novel structure that can sustain the digital transition of the power grid into a decentralized and demand-centric system.  
A power grid where the end-user engagement is more pronounced to alleviate the stress on the thermal plants thus relieving the dispatch problem to meet power reliably at a cheaper marginal cost of generation.  
The essence of such engagement is through manufacturing energy intelligence and power flexibility from end-users and garnering this flexibility to address power grid dispatch requirements at a cheaper overall cost. Cultivating end-user flexibility is part of demand-side management and requires a paradigm shift into end-user consumption.



Dr. Sameh El Khatib

Dr. Sameh El Khatib received his PhD in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from McGill University, where he pursued his research in power system analysis and economics, electricity market restructuring and planning, as well as decision-making in the energy sector. He worked under the supervision of one of the most renowned scholars of power systems operation & planning, an IEEE Fellow, Professor Francisco D. Galiana.
Besides having spent time in research at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi & MIT in Cambridge, Dr. Sameh collaborted with GE, Etihad Airlines, ICAD and the Univerity of Tokyo while in the fole as Strategy Constultant at Booz & Company.
Before being appointed as CEO of SmartWatt, Dr. El Khatib was a director of the energy & power division, as well as senior energy advisor for the CEO of ICAD, one of the largest KSA based system technology & integration companies in the region. Dr. El Khatib has numerous publications in power systems in top-tier academic journals.



Obada Al-Khatib

Obada Al-Khatib received his Ph.D. degree in electrical and information engineering from The University of Sydney, M.Eng. degree (Hons.) in communication and computer from the National University of Malaysia, Master of Education degree from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and B.Sc. degree (Hons.) in electrical engineering from Qatar University. 
From 2006 to 2009, he worked with the Consolidated Contractors International Company, Qatar, as an electrical engineer in various Oil and Gas projects. In 2015, he joined the Centre for IoT and Telecommunications, The University of Sydney, as a Research Associate. Since 2016, he has been an Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, University of Wollongong in Dubai, UAE. His current research interests include machine learning for 5G and beyond, IoT, vehicular networks, green networks, and cloud/edge computing.
