Pathways to Chartered

Information on the pathways to becoming chartered

Pathways to Chartered

Engineers Australia offers the following pathways to Chartered:

Cost: $1760 inc GST

Application Criteria:

  • Current Membership Grade of Full Member (MIEAust, TMIEAust, AMIEAust) or above.

Application Process:

  1. Complete the Chartered Self Assessment, providing a competency rating against the Stage 2 Competencies.
  2. Complete the Industry Review to the level of Functional or Above.  The Industry Review involves providing a short statement of the items of evidence that you may have to demonstrate your Chartered competence for each of the Stage 2 Competencies.  These statements then need to be confirmed by a suitable Industry Reviewer. Note that no actual evidence documents need to be submitted at this point in the process.
  3. Enrol and provide your payment, CV and CPD Log.  You will need to confirm your areas of practice you are seeking for Chartered and also link your completed Industry Review to your application at this point.
  4. Our Assessors will then contact you for an Evidence Discussion (usually within 3 weeks of your enrolment).  This discussion is your opportunity to seek clarification and ask questions before you provide your evidence documents for assessment.  The Assessors will have reviewed your Industry Review results and may suggest alternate evidence be submitted than that suggested and will also discuss the Areas of practice chosen.  Once the discussion is complete, you will then upload your evidence documents.  Find out more about Chartered Evidence here.  In some cases, our Assessors may feel that an Evidence Discussion is not necessary and will instead simply provide comment to this effect and request your upload based on your Industry Review.
  5. A Professional Interview will be arranged once review and assessment of your evidence documents is complete and satisfactory.  The Interview will take approx. 1 hour and will involve a broad discussion of the evidence presented throughout your application.  A presentation may be required and will be confirmed when arrangements are made.  The Interview will be with at least one Assessor and may include external Industry panelists.
  6. CHARTERED.  Following the Interview, you will receive an email notification confirming your Chartered award and Areas of Practice.  An official Certificate will follow in the mail soon after.

Note that Steps 1 & 2 can be started whilst you are at the grade of Student/Graduate or a non-Member.

Cost: $1760 inc GST

Application Criteria:

  • Must have at least 20+ Years’ Post Graduate Experience.  Roles held need to have included significant responsibilities in leading Teams or Projects.
  • Current Membership Grade of Full Member (MIEAust, TMIEAust, AMIEAust) or above.
  • Provide a detailed CV.  The CV is in lieu of other evidence – the Assessors must be able to clearly see that the Chartered Stage 2 Competencies have been met by the roles and activities described.  A company profile or similar is not sufficient.

Application Process:

  1. Email [email protected] requesting use of the Chartered via Interview pathway and attach your CV.
  2. Engineers Australia will review your CV, and if accepted, will provide access to the Chartered via Interview pathway within the online application system. If not accepted, you will be advised by email which will detail other Chartered application options for you.
  3. On receipt of Alternate Pathway approved notification, follow the prompts to enrol and provide your payment, CV (again) and CPD Log.
  4. Unless notified by our Assessors to discuss or provide any further information, you will be contacted to arrange a suitable time for your Professional Interview.   The Interview will take approx. 1 hour and will involve a broad discussion of your engineering career.
  5. CHARTERED.  Following the Interview, you will receive an email notification confirming your Chartered award and Areas of Practice.  An official Certificate will follow in the mail soon after.

Application Criteria:

  • Included in the agreement between your University and Engineers Australia
  • Are an engineering professional who is currently employed in an academic position at a Tertiary Institution that is recognised by Engineers Australia.
  • Have an Academic role that includes responsibilities for teaching engineering programs that are accredited or recognised by Engineers Australia.

 - Candidates must provide:

  • an Academic Portfolio that indicates career history, teaching, research and publication activities, and
  • a Self Assessment against the Chartered Competencies (view the document)

Application Process:

  1. Review the Application criteria and if you believe you and/or your Staff are eligible, email [email protected] to discuss receiving approval for this pathway.  You may need to provide your CV or the CVs of your Staff that show details of academic careers and engineering related teaching responsibilities. An Agreement including fees payable will then be reached.
  2. Engineers Australia will enable access to eligible candidates, to the Chartered for Academics pathway within the online application system.
  3. On receipt of the Alternate Pathway approved notification, follow the prompts to enrol, providing the Letter of Support from the Dean as part of your Academic Portfolio file uploaded in the CV field, and the completed Self Assessment in the  CPD Log field.  You may also need to provide full or part payment of the fee as indicated, depending on what has been negotiated with your University.
  4. Unless notified by our Assessors to discuss or provide any further information, you will b contacted to arrange a suitable time for your Professional Interview.  The Interview will take approx 1 hour and will involve a broad discussion of your engineering career.
