2018 Engineers Australia’s Western Australian Engineering Excellence Awards
The WA winners of the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the Westin Hotel Perth in July this year. The Awards recognise outstanding achievements in the engineering field and the invaluable contribution engineering makes to the economy, community and environment.
Craig Power received the Professional Engineer of the Year 2018 Award for his work on engineering related digital OHS systems as well as a number of engineering education projects, including mentoring high school students through their STEM studies.
The 2018 WA Young Professional Engineer of the Year 2018 was awarded to Jordan Butler. A member of our Young Engineers Australia WA committee, Jordan became involved with EA during his studies at Edith Cowan University and contributed significantly to the student practicum working group, set up to increase industry employment of engineering under graduates.
There were six projects awarded Australian Engineering Excellence Awards for Western Australia that were carried through to the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards which were announced in September.

2018 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards
We are delighted that the following two projects from Western Australia were recipients of Australian Engineering Excellence Awards (AEEA).
Balconi Smart Torch – Global Live
Balconi Telecommunications
The Balconi Smart Torch (BST) – Global Live, is a portable in-field telehealth office allowing for global coverage through connectivity by internet, smartphone and two-way video conferencing. Fully contained in a small case and powered by its own solar panels, this newly developed technology provides remote and disadvantaged communities access to medical specialists.
Newman Battery Storage Project
Alinta Energy
Alinta’s Newman Power Station in the Pilbara region is the world’s largest battery energy storage system projects. U utility-scaled battery energy storage systems to provide grid-forming services on a high voltage network. Its innovation means that (as far as can be determined) it is the first utility-scale battery energy storage system to provide grid-forming services on a high voltage network. This capability makes it not only the largest, but the first battery energy storage system globally with the capability to support a high voltage network on its own.
Engineers Australia Medal – WA Recipients
At the end of year Sundowner, the WA Division President announced the recipients of the Engineers Australia Medal. The medal is awarded for meritorious service to Engineers Australia Western Australian division as well as for work achieved in the community. Congratulations to the 2018 award winners.
