MEDIA RELEASE | 2019 Mechanical College Awards announced

The year’s top mechanical engineers have been honoured at the Warman Building and Design Competition and Mechanical College Awards Dinner in Sydney.

The Mechanical College award program recognises and rewards outstanding achievement and eminence in the practice of mechanical engineering and service to the profession.

The AGM Michell Medal  for innovative and significant outcomes was awarded to Dr Mark Skanes.

Dr Skanes has over 39 years in leading and consulting project and engineering teams and in providing non-executive company directorships. Over that period, he has been engaged in senior engineering, NEDs, and consultancy positions within defence, electricity and gas utilities, mining and manufacturing, rail, construction, sporting bodies, and the public service sectors.

He is currently the Managing Director and Principal for Accu Trax Pty Ltd advising on corporate governance as well as delivering innovative STEM solutions by way of engineering, reliability centered maintenance, asset management, project delivery and performance improvement.

Dr Skanes is currently an industry mentor in the South Australian IMNIS MedTech-Pharma program

Dr Roger Lumley received the Sir George Julius Medal for the publication “The Development of High Strength and Ductility in High-Pressure Die-Cast Al-Si-Mg Alloys from Secondary Sources”.

Dr Lumley is Senior Technical Specialist for AWBell, working on an initiative to develop new Australian capability in vacuum melting for aero-engine components.  He is also currently working on a skills development project in the VET sector.

His areas of expertise include advanced (manufacturing) methods engineering, ferrous and non-ferrous production, foundry technology, advanced heat treatment, self-healing materials, non-destructive testing, welding, powder metallurgy, quality systems and additive manufacturing. He has authored over 110 technological publications including patents, journal and conference papers, and a book. 

The 2019 Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year was awarded to Don Moloney.

Mr Moloney established the Navy’s Centre for Innovation in 2017, for which he was awarded a Gold Commendation from the Chief of the Navy. Don initiated and continues to lead the Navy’s 3D Printing program and has pioneered a number of Australian-firsts including 3D Printers deployed to Naval operations, metal 3D printed parts on ships and more.

He is an elected member of EA Sydney Division, co-founded the Sydney Innovation network, is on the organising committee for the International Maritime Conference and is a regular speaker at forums and conferences. On the side, Don runs a tech-startup focused on transport sustainability.
