The Engineering Gender Diversity Awards were handed out at the Engineers Australia Future Shapers Gala at Brisbane’s Sofitel Ballroom on Friday night.

Presented by the Women in Engineering National Committee, the Awards identify, recognise and reward companies that strive towards national engineering excellence in encouraging gender diversity.

Consultancy firm Hatch received the Most Outstanding Company in Gender Diversity award for encouraging more gender balance, both within the company and the wider profession. Hatch was accredited by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency in 2019 as an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality and recently reviewed and improved flexible work and leave options to support the lifestyle of employees. They have a strong focus on initiatives to attract and retain women in the organisation at all levels, have introduced an inclusive leadership development program, and are regularly analysing equity in pay, regardless of gender.

The Most Ambitious Company in Gender Diversity was awarded to Stantec Australia for initiatives designed to attract, retain and develop female staff. These include Women@Stantec, a grassroots employee-driven program based on shared interests. Women and men across the business volunteer their time to advance diversity and inclusion across the business, support professional networking, provide education and development opportunities, address business challenges, and offer suggestions for improving corporate policies.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) was named the Most Encouraging Non-Profit Group in Gender Diversity for their multi-faceted approach to gender diversity across programs. The EWB Education Program has seen strong female participation, both from the students participating and emerging engineers and professionals who volunteer to conduct sessions. Utilising female role models throughout the program has proven to be a powerful positive influence; challenging existing gender stereotypes which young girls are so frequently exposed to in their learning journey.

Three nominees were also highly commended. Norman, Disney & Young (Most Outstanding Company in Gender Diversity), Precious Plastic (Non-Profit Group in Gender Diversity) and QinetiQ Pty Ltd (Most Ambitious Company in Gender Diversity.

National Committee for Women in Engineering Chair, Hayley Rohrlach, said she was impressed with the caliber of submissions.

“The quality of entries was extremely high, and the awards committee had a difficult time selecting winners. We congratulate all nominees for their commitment to fostering gender diversity.” said Ms Rohrlach.
