MEDIA RELEASE | Engineers Australia welcomes 25,000th active chartered member

Engineers Australia has reached a major milestone, announcing AGL’s Sarah Hannah as its 25,000th active Chartered member at a special ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The Chartered status via Engineers Australia can be earned across 24 areas of engineering practice, from chemical or biomedical engineering to fire safety, leadership and management, and systems engineering.

Speaking at the event, Engineers Australia CEO, Dr Bronwyn Evans said the benefits of Chartered status include professional recognition, improved value in the market and recognition within their own business.

“Chartered credentials are internationally benchmarked and recognised, demonstrating that Australian Engineers are at the global forefront and meet world class competency standards,” said Dr Evans.

“With compulsory registration of engineers on the way in Victoria, it’s also worth noting that Chartered shows a higher level of competence than registration. Registration is about regulatory compliance and minimum standards to practice. Chartered is about best practice.”

Ms Hannah, who has been with AGL for seven of her 14 years as an engineer, said she was surprised and flattered to be named the 25,000th active member.

“It’s a really special feeling. Chartered gives you a framework for development and I think it adds a wonderful layer of importance to the profession of engineering. For me – it’s credibility and I’m proud I’ve achieved it,” said Ms Hannah.

The Interim Head of Asset Systems achieved her credential through AGL’s in-house Chartered engineer program, run in partnership with Engineers Australia.

AGL is aiming to have all its engineers across Australia reach Chartered status over 2019, and to constantly mentor graduate engineers towards the program.
